I admit I found it funny even though I think a lot of my friends and family would be horrified. Never been to one of her “khutba”s (is that what they call them?) so can’t really comment on the content. Although have heard negative comments, such as a tendency to avoid relevant questions and her supposedly stating that the people in the earthquake affected regions in Pakistan were involved in immoral activities thus justifying them being afflicted. Since I’m just going by what I’ve read in the news, if she didnt say it then all’s good and maybe she is doing some exemplary work. However if she did make those remarks… it is quite unfortunate that someone who thinks such is responsible for the religious upbringing of many.
Updated: In lieu of Faraz’s comment, reread my post and realized it seems to be slanted. In actuality I only meant it to be an info. piece not an opinion. Gist being I am neither for or against her. One can’t really form an opinion based on rumours alone.
My mother is a very active Farhat Hashmi student, taking the course on-line. My mother was always religious, and taught me good religious values growing up, but was never particular about things like hijab or da’wah until she started attending the course. Now she’s serious about these things, and has encouraged many of her relatives and friends to also follow Islam more closely. I’ve listened to the lectures myself with my mother, and I think she is doing great work. One of Farhat Hashmi’s daughters does the Quran recitation and Tajweed portion of the course, and she recites beautifully, masha-Allah.
Is it surprising at all that the first quote against her in the article comes from Tarek Fatah? Given the growing strength of “progressive Islam” advocates, it is somewhat refreshing to find someone with more traditional values being as influential as she is.
Faraz: Thankyou for the input. As I mentioned I havent really been directly in contact so don’t have an opinion per se. Everything Tarek Fateh says tends to go with a grain of salt or maybe a handful of salt. :). I just found the articles interesting. Maybe you could give some information regarding the earthquake comment as well? As in whether it was taken out of context? Or whether it was a rumour?
I don’t know anything about the earthquake comment, sorry. Her organization, Al-Huda, does get involved in some good social work, such as fundraising for disaster-afflicted regions. So at best, if she did say something like that, it was probably taken out of context. Locally, I see the all the farhat-hashmite auntis supporting and contributing to similar fundraising efforts, so they’re all good by me.
Hello Saira
Thanks for linking to my blog!! Your lucky you havent come into contact with her. I have an aunt in Pakistan who is a devoted follower and I have seen the way her views have changed. I think she is doing great work in terms of explaining Quran and the social work, however, the only concern I have is the way her followers make a religious duty to preach the same things to others who are not interested. Now, I dont know what she says herself but her followers(namely, my aunt) telling me not to be friends with Jews, Christains, Hindus and people of other faith. If thats not teaching hate, then what is it.
Also, just to inform you I was told that her position in Pakistan has also weekened since her source of funding has come into question with the authority. Since, 9/11 all financial transactions are closely monitored by authorities in Pakistan and apparantly she could not come clean in that area. Hence, on the run………..
Now, I dont want to make any connections but if you have want to see how fundamentalism comes back and bites a community, then try to get hold of this CBC documentary called “Cover Up”. If you have Rogers Digital Box, then you can check it out on Channel 300>GreatTV>CBC On Demand>SouthAsian TV>Documentaries. It will give you an idea how fundamentalism had a direct impact on us and our society which is open to all religions and religious views.
@Abrar:I never heard her name untill I got the news shes in Canada and run some school in karachi.
You mentioned two things;By force imposing law and not befreinding with non-Muslims.
I myself is not a religious scholar but got chance to explore verses about these two issues and Quran never mentioned anywhere that you cant talk and keep relation with non-Quranic followers.Infact Quran does allow marraige with ‘People of Book’
I know farhat’s interpetition comes from following verse:
O you who have attained to faith! Do not take the Jews and the Christians for your allies: they are but allies of one another and whoever of you allies himself with them becomes, verily, one of them; behold, God does not guide such evildoers. (5:51)
But farhat intenteially or Unintentially missed the next verses which cleared who cant be not friends.Quran says in 5:57
O you who believe, do not befriend those among the recipients of previous scripture who mock and ridicule your religion , nor shall you befriend the disbelievers. You shall reverence GOD, if you are really believers.
Now things are clear. If any of your friend insult you or your family member, will not you react?will not you prefer to stay away from the person.?
Its sad that muslims themselves take things out of the context.
I did make a post in response of ignorant Nena Shea’s article about saudi syllabus.I wonder why christiains and jews dont bother to look their own teachings?
kadnan.blogspot.com/2006/05/friendship-with-non-muslims-nina-shea.html
P.S: Why same canadian govt kick the arse of Tarek Fatah and Babar CHuadhary who often visits Canada? Those who opposes farhat, are they follower of tarek and babr?
I do watch babr’s channel Alrahan and Alrahim, and I believe that people like Tarek,Babar Chudhary and Farhat are big religion twister and they all should be sent to Gitmo or drop them in lebonan so that they get burnt by jewish missiles.
Adnan: hmm. I tend to find it quite difficult to comment on religion. Even those who claim they try and understand still tend to give the people they consider learned final say. 90% of the people I know havent read the transaltion. The general consensus seems to be that reading the arabic version is more important which in my opinion is the stupidest thing I have ever come across in my life. A person who’s read it say 5 times by the age of 15 is given a higher status to him/her who may have only read the translation once. There seems to be this unsaid understanding that if the common man were to read it they would interpret it wrong and consequently they can placate themselves by merely reciting arabic aloud and reading translations and explanations by those who have studied it. But then I suppose that is in every religion. That and the fear of questioning, a sign of the weakening of faith supposedly.
Eitherways really no point in my disseminating my views. People will think what they want and believe what they want and personally I really feel no need to ensure others believe exactly what I believe.
As for Tarek Fateh and Babar Chaudhary. No clue.
Saira those who stop students to ask questions are actually *weak* in knowledge. There are many other good scholars like Deedat,Zakir Naik and Tariq Jameel who do encourage others for questioning.
I agree 100% with you that just reading arabic is not answer of understanding Islam UNLESS you dont know arabic properly. But it can’t be used as an EXCUSE to stop reading quran or offering other prayers.
I know there is a cult here who says that there is no need to offer namaz and read quran unless become *Pious*.Now that stupid scholar dont know that how one can getrid of evilness.
Anyway if we dont face such morons then how prophecy of MUhammad(SAW) will be fuilfilled who clearly said that there would be atleast 79 sects in Islam.
Babar is more moron than farhat. He is very clever and his teaching says to Act upon Quran and forhet hadiths.Other things he says that Religious life is different and professional life is different. That is if I rape a woman in night and go for Fajar Salat then its acceptable infront of Allah.
I know his teachings is what the *other world* want.He was present as a *Moderated Muslim* on BBC.offcourse hes moderated since hes screwing orignal teachings.
I don’t get all the hating on Farhat Hashmi. She encourages the understanding of the Quran. Under her tutelage, my mother pretty much memorized all of Surah Baqarah, in both Arabic and Urdu. If people have complaints that her students “preach the same things to others who are not interested”, that’s not her problem. Indifference towards religion isn’t an excuse for not practicing; if someone isn’t interested in hearing about religion, that’s his or her problem. Da’wah is a responsibility of every Muslim, regardless of whether other people want to hear the da’wah or not. As far as discouraging questions, I’ve never really seen this myself, even though I have a lot of contact with many Al-Huda students.
Either way, the comment that Tarek Fatah, Farhat Hashmi, and Babar Chaudhary “should be sent to Gitmo or drop them in lebonan so that they get burnt by jewish missiles” is ridiculous, and completely inappropriate even if only in jest. I have no idea who Babar Chaudry is, and Tarek Fatah drives me nuts, but hearing comments like that make me feel like there’s just no point in trying to rationalize with people.
“People will think what they want and believe what they want and personally I really feel no need to ensure others believe exactly what I believe.” I couldn’t have said it better myself.
ASSALAMUALAIKUM. How strange of ppl that they cant place Dr.HASHMI at a certain place. Some say she is FUNDO some say LIBERAL, some say she has sold out her institute and from that money got immigration in CANADA, Some say she is living ILLEGALLAY IN CANADA. Some say she works for JEWISH LOBBY some say she is hired by SAUDI GOVT. Some say she made the WOMEN LIKE SLAVES. some say the DIVORCE RATE is SHOOTING UP due to her teachings.only one lady ant sooooooooo many different views prove that all these are accusation on her nothing more. how much work has she created for her opponents to do. Ha ha ha ha ……
after reading maclean i came to know what is yellow journalism. how sad the criticizers donot have anything new to say, to write, they are just wasting their time as well as the readers. all these are just table stories. as i know Farhat Hashmi before she founded her institute. she has moved our lives towards true islam.may Allah bless her.so be it.
does the maclean ppl think that we think he is trust worthy.he is a lier.lier and lier.as he did not investigate anything otherwise he wud not have to write it. he is nothing more than a fool living in fools paradise.
Most of you are probably young and don’t realize the politization in the translation and it’s explanation that has occured in pakistan. I have had close encounters with these types and they are a frightening lot, the idea of their way or no way is what I am afraid of. I am a practising mulsim and I wear the Hijab and it has come to me slowly. One of my true friends told me not to rush in learning the Quran. Allah SAW gave it to the prophet pbuh in 23 years and the true scholar and their works in order to understand takes as much time if not more. So my friends I will give you a piece of advise read the quran and its meaning slowly and inshallah you will see things clearer than u have before. Don’t waste time on vain talk and it says so in the quran surah mudathir before you know it will be time to stand before allah and answer for your deeds. May Allah grant all my muslim brothers and sister true and unbiased knowledge of Allah and his messege.

i was going thru some blogs and found one regarding Dr Farhat HAshmi…….. ur comment on the fact that one cannot b friends wid non muslims…… well i saw adnan’s comment on tht. i wasnt satisfied so i m writing to u myself now……
to be freinds with non muslims is not wrong at all , but care should be taken not to be intimate freinds with them as normally people are on their friends way of life because of the age similarity. what happens is they are highly influenced by their freinds and indirectly follow dem. to work with them, in businnes or school can be done, but to tell deep secrets and so on is not right. See the basic thing is that when one fears losing his islamic deen in the circle of non muslims then one should be on strict guard. u see what happens is Chirtians and JEws are enemeies against one another. When it comes to muslims, these become freinds with each other and have enimity to the Muslims. a very open example is seen in the politics in the world between countries as can be seen by all. So a muslim who is smart and aware of these things takes extra care…… u need to talk to them presenting the best of deen in u so as for dawah purposes………. who knows sum1 becomes a Muslim coz of u
Please dont assume anything before you listen to farhat hashmi, these are lies about her.
i listen her…she is gud …authantic scholar masha Allah…she only fears Allah nd never cares wat ppl say abt her..may Allah bless her
