So apparently I never ended up blogging about my trip to NYC other than the review on the Sheraton on the Hudson. I think mainly because I was planning to do something detailed. At this point though I seem to have run out of steam and can’t really recall most of the detail other than we left on a thursday night ( 17 Nov) and returned sunday evening (19 Nov). So am just going to jot down some higlights (points?) I can remember:

You must go to the observatory at the The Empire State Building. I’ve been wanting to visit it since I saw Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow. Also make sure you get the ESB Audio Tour. Totally worth it. Cant imagine there being a point to paying for admission without the tour. However avoid the helicopter ride simulation. Totally not worth it.

We bought the CityPass, unfortunately on the second day which is why we really didnt get to do much with it. Was a bit of a disappointment since we presumed wrongly so that the MoMA was the MET and considering the only other attractions of immediate interest on the pass were The Empire State Building and The Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises, we pretty much didnt get as much out of it as we would have liked. In retrospect the New York Pass seemed a much better deal except we had no internet access and therefore no way of checking up on it. eek.

We took the Circle Line evening cruise. Was pretty cold but satisfying. The city looks lovely lit up at night.

We also went to the American Museum of Natural History. Unfortunately the CityPass only covered admission and none of the attractions and from our experience it was quite obvious admission was absolutely useless. Definately not going back there again. But we managed to get a glimpse of Central Park so I guess it sorta worked out.

We also spent quite some time walking in the south end of the island. Canal St. and a trip down to Battery Park. Canal St. is a must. Absolute must. Perfumes and handbags for $20.

Tip: There are a number of free buses, the NYWaterway buses, starting from the ferry docks to all sections of the city. They all go back from the drop points to the ferry docks. Take advantage of them.

Paid a visit to Trinity Church (part of the group was catholic). Very serene.

TGIF at Times Square is beyond expensive. For some odd reason all 5 floors are filled to capacity despite the exorbitant prices. The food was so-so

We were considering trying out the New York Party Shuttle but didnt have the time.

I badly (as in really really badly) want to see Spamalot. However I couldnt manage it this trip. Sigh.

Prime Outlets near Niagra Falls has a kickass Ralp Lauren Outlet. I think the one we went to was Grove City in PA.

Weehawken aint dangerous.

Went through a number of hotel sites while searching for a hotel in/around NYC. Had a majorly limited budget and 4 people. Choice was made based on online sites alone. Was quite satisfied with the choice. Around CAN$400 for two nights for a room which had two double beds, a pull-out sofa bed, a microwave, DVD player etc. etc. Wonderful service to boot. Also I believe you can get quite a great view of the hudson and NYC if you opt for one of the smaller rooms.

Only issue was the USD$6 (one-way) ferry ride to NYC. If you’re planning to take in the night life, is probably not the best bet for you even though the hotel has complimentary pickup from an additional ferry location if their own ferry is closed as is the case on weekends. Last ferry is 1.30 a.m. on weekdays. Dont know about weekends.

As far as the town of Weehawken goes, quite liked it. Very quaint and some really lovely houses. Not at all the dangerous, subarban area I expected. Oh and driving was a piece of cake.

I did my hotel booking through Expedia because at that point in time it had the lowest rate. Had no issues whatsoever. They dont even ask for a credit card at the hotel. Websites I found useful for finding hotels:
http://www.hotels.ca
http://www.cheaptickets.com
http://www.nyc.com/hotels/
http://www.priceline.com (Can bid on hotel rooms. When I went with ECSU one year, we managed to get really cheap rooms at the Sofitel. However you do need to know a US resident since you require a US credit card)
